UtiliTrust audits utility bills. To do that we need your bills, and a bill is a personal document: it carries your name, where you live, and an account number. This page says exactly what we collect, where it goes, and what we will not do with it.

What we collect

What we deliberately do not keep

We do not store your full utility account number. Our systems retain only the last four digits, which is enough to tell two of your accounts apart and not enough to act on your account. We do not ask for, want, or store your utility login credentials, and we never sign in to a utility portal as you.

Who else sees your data

We do not sell your data, and we do not share it for advertising. We use a small number of service providers to run the product:

Your bill documents themselves are stored on our own server infrastructure, not with a third party.

When you ask us for help

If you report a problem while signed in, we attach a snapshot of your account to it automatically: which bills you have and what happened to each, how many properties you have, and which parts of the service were switched on at the time. We do this so we can look into it without asking you to dig anything out.

It does not include the contents of your bills: no charges, no meter readings, no service address. If you write to us without being signed in, we keep only the address you give us and what you tell us.

If you refer a friend

Your referral link carries a code that identifies you. If somebody subscribes through it, we record that they came from you, so the credit reaches the right account and reaches it once. We tell you that a referral succeeded; we do not tell you who it was, what they pay, or anything about their bills. Your friend is not told who referred them either.

How long we keep it

We keep your bills and the findings from them for as long as your account is open, because an audit gets better with history. Several bills are what let us spot a charge that changed. Our database is backed up nightly and those backups are retained for 14 days. Ask us to delete your account and we will remove your bills, the data read from them, and your account, within 30 days.

Your choices

Email hello@utilitrust.com for any of these.

Security

Traffic is encrypted in transit. Access to the production system is limited to people who operate it. No system is perfectly secure, and we would rather say that plainly than imply otherwise; if we ever discover a breach affecting your data, we will tell you.

Children

UtiliTrust is not intended for anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect their data.

Changes

If we change this policy in a way that affects how your data is handled, we will update the date above and tell account holders by email.
